The Piute Indians lived in the Antelope Valley for many years before the railroad and first white settlers came in the late 19th century.

The town experienced its first economic boom with the discovery of gold and borax in the area in the early 20th Century.

In 1933, the US Army Air Corps came to this region to conduct flight and weapons testing at what would later become Edwards Air Force Base. This launched the regions long association with many elements of the aerospace industry.
