For the last couple decades, Palmdale has consistently ranked as one of the top 25 fastest growing communities in the USA, fueled by spillover from the Greater Los Angeles region.

Early settlers first arrived in Palmdale in about 1886. Apparently they mistook the local Joshua Trees for Palm Trees. Palmdale was primarily an agricultural community until the outbreak of World War II, when nearby Edwards Air Force Base and a number of other related aerospace facilities were developed.
