Angels Camp (pop: 3,000) is the only incorporated city in Calaveras County. Mark Twain based his short story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County on a story he claimed he heard while visiting at the local Angels Hotel. The event is commemorated with a Jumping Frog Jubilee each May at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds, just east of the city.

Nearby activities include golf, skiing, whitewater rafting, boating, fishing, horseback riding and hiking. Take a short drive to the Moaning Caverns and Mercer Caverns, both offering guided tours and gold panning. Angels Camp is part of California Gold Country (also Mother Lode Country), made famour for the mineral deposits and gold mines that attracted waves of immigrants, known as the 49ers, during the 1849 California Gold Rush.

Mark Twain set his story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", in the county. Each year, the county hosts its County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee, featuring a frog jumping contest, to celebrate the association with Twain's story. The celebrated California red-legged frog, feared absent from the county by 1969, was rediscovered in 2003.

Mercer Caverns
Named for a gold prospector who discovered the caves around 1885 and filed a claim. The caverns have a large number of speleothems, stalactites, and stalagmites. Under the limestone calcite are a range of aragonite minerals that are pure CaCO3.

Facilities include Courthouse, Jail Yard and Hall of Records. Visitors can see displays dating to the Gold Rush era and an outstanding Mi Wok Indian exhibit includes artifacts, photos and quotes revealing Mi Wok lifestyle.
