Arroyo Grande (pop: 15,750) is prime agricultural land that was originally part of the Santa Manuela Rancho land grant of the 1830s. Ranching expanded in 1882 with the arrival of the railroad and again in 1911 with the incorporation as its own city.

Because of the mild climate and rich soil, this Valley has a long history as one of California’s most productive agricultural regions beginning . in the early 1900s when the Valley produced bumper crops of cabbages, carrots, beans, peas, pumpkins and onions. Vegetables are still the foundation of a farm economy, but award-winning, local wines are attracting attention from around the world.
