Welcome to Camp San Luis Obispo
Original Home of the California National Guard
Camp San Luis Obispo provides classroom and field training facilities to a wide range of civil agencies and western states military guard units. This base formerly served as an Infantry Division Camp and POW Camp for the US Army during World War II. Formerly called Camp Merriam, it was established in 1928. Facilities include a number of firing ranges, classrooms and barracks.
Camp San Luis Obispo has been the home of the California National Guard since the 1920's. It is currently the home of the 223d Infantry Regiment, and several other training and logistics activities of the California National Guard.

Cuesta College
This college opened for classes in 1965 on a southwest portion of the camp, rented from the California National Guard. The Cuesta College Board of Trustees purchased 160 acres of the camp and 20 acres adjoining for a permanent campus. The land was on the other side of Chorro Creek from the temporary campus. Construction was started in 1970 and the transfer from the temporary site was completed in 1978.
El Chorro Regional Park
El Chorro Regional Park was created in 1972 when over 700 acres of the camp were given to San Luis Obispo County. The park contains barbecue facilities, a baseball field, volleyball courts and camping sites. Dairy Creek Golf Course is located in the southwestern portion of the park. An area in the northern portion of the park is off limits due to the discovery of unexploded munitions.

Dairy Creek Golf Course is the newest of the three courses operated by San Luis Obispo County Parks. This "links-like" course is located on El Chorro Regional Park land just east of Highway 1 between San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay, it boasts some incredible elevation changes, forced carries over water and rocky arroyos. The bentgrass greens will put the steadiest stroke to the test. Add tricky sea breezes whipping around nearby Hollister Peak and suddenly you've got a 6,548-yard course to be reckoned with.
Salinas Dam
Salinas Dam, which forms Santa Margarita Lake, was built to supply water to Camp San Luis Obispo. The lake now supplies water to the city of San Luis Obispo, though it is still owned by the United States Army Corps of Engineers.
