Morro Bay State Park

Morro Bay State Park features lagoon and natural bay habitat as well as the Natural History Museum. The bay’s most prominent landmark is Morro Rock. The park has opportunities for sailing, fishing, hiking, and bird watching. The park also has a colorful marina and an 18-hole public golf course. On the bay’s northeast edge is a pristine saltwater marsh that supports a thriving bird population.

Morro Bay Museum of Natural History

The park museum has exhibits and gardens that cover natural features and cultural history, Native American life, geology, and oceanography. The museum offers activities for all ages: nature walks, exhibits, lectures, puppet shows, videos, docent led tours and special events.

The Museum of Natural History is within minutes of the Heron Rookery, Morro Bay State Park, Montaña de Oro State Park, the El Moro Elfin Forest and Audubon's Sweet Springs Nature Preserve. The museum overlooks Morro Bay which is both a State and National Estuary.

Morro Strand State Beach

A three-mile stretch of beach connects the southern and northern entrances to the beach. This coastal frontage park featuring outstanding picnic sites, fishing, windsurfing, jogging, and kite flying. These hikes begin at a particularly intriguing trailhead called The Cloisters, a combination wetland, small housing development and city park that’s sandwiched between Coast Highway and the low dunes back of Morro Strand State Beach. Wildlife experts, landscape architects and park of?cials teamed to create a pond and related “natural” habitats designed to attract a variety of birds.

Morro Rock

Often referred to as the Gibraltar of the Pacific, Morro Rock rises up 576 feet of out Morro Bay. If is one of the most intriguing landmarks of the California coastline.

The great rounded dome explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo named “El Moro” when he sailed by in 1542 has since shrunk considerably in size. Morro is missing a million tons or so of basaltic rock—the result of quarrying operations that took place from the 1880s until 1969 when the rock was declared a state park preserve.

CCNHA supports education and recreation activities at many local area state and regional parks. They sponsors 200 volunteers who provide park programs including free school group tours to 7,000 children annually, special events and exhibits, Monarch Butterfly grove tours and more that 500 nature walks a year. Memberships and contributions are key to supporting park’s public environmental education programs.
