Eureka (pop: 26,780) is the county seat and principal city in Humboldt County in Northern California. Located adjacent to Humboldt Bay, this regional port city is situated near extensive preserves of the world's tallest trees, the Coast Redwoods, and dozens of related parks. Eureka is the site of the headquarters for both the North Coast Redwoods District of the California State Parks System and Six Rivers National Forest. The city, a major player in the historic west coast lumber trade, is the site of hundreds of significant Victorian homes, including the Carson Mansion, situated at the head of its Old Town Historic District. The city was voted as the #1 best small art town in John Villani's book "The 100 Best Small Art Towns In America." Eureka boasts the region's largest monthly cultural and arts event, "Arts' Alive!" On the first Saturday of each month more than 80 Eureka business and local galleries open their doors to the public. Often local cuisine and beverages accompany live performances by acclaimed regional bands and other types of performance art. As a major regional center, the city offers many lodgings, restaurants, and shopping areas, including dozens of specialty shops in its historic 19th Century Old Town commercial district and the only large mall in the region. Exciting high adventure opportunities for exploring, boating, camping, hiking, watersports, weekend retreats and more.

* Sequioa Park Zoo * |
|---|
| Sequioa Park Zoo was established in 1907 by the city of Eureka to inspire wonder, understanding and respect for the natural world by providing fun, rewarding, educational experiences that encourage meaningful connections between animals, humans, and our environment. The zoo offers educational programs for school-age children and a barnyard, where children can interact with goats, sheep, chickens, rabbits, llamas, alpacas, and a dog. There is an educational building located in the front of the zoo called Secrets of the Forest, which educates children about the animals and organisms in the redwood forest. Residents of the main zoo include: a Black Bear, Patagonian Cavies, Cotton Top Tamarins, Spider Monkeys, White Handed Gibbons, and Flamingos. The zoo has a free flight aviary with a pond and waterfall. Birds in the aviary includes Sacred ibis, Red-crested turaco, European roller, Green heron, Crested screamer, Guira cuckoo, Blue-gray tanager, Cedar waxwing, California quail, and Red golden pheasant. The Sequoia Park Zoo Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports the zoo's mission through fundraising and public outreach programs. The Foundation operates a gift shop and cafe. After 100 years free entry, the zoo started charging admission in the summer 2008.
