    Welcome to McKinleyville

    McKinleyville (pop: 13,600) is located 5 north of Arcata along the California seacoast. It is the location of the Arcata-Eureka Airport.

    This town was named in honor of President McKinley after his assasination and is combination of three early pioneer settlments; Dow's Prairie, Minorville and Calville.

    The Hammond Trail
    Over five miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails linking Arcata, McKinleyville, and the surrounding areas. Following the historic Hammond Lumber Company railroad grade, the trail begins at the Hammond Bridge, crossing the Mad River and extens north to Clam Beach County Park (which features overnight camping). It is a part of both the California Coastal Trail (CCT) and the Pacific Coast Bike Route.

    Azalea State Reserve
    A reserve for western azalea (Rhododendron occidentale). Each spring, a profusion of pink and white blossoms scents the air. There is a picnic area available. Plan to visit in April and May when azaleas are in bloom.

    Humboldt Lagoons State Park
    North Humboldt County

    A marshland habitat with a rich variety of marsh plants, birds and other animals. The park offers boating, fishing, bird watching, beach combing, hiking and if you bring your own boat then enjoy exploring the lagoon.

    Redwood National Park
    The Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP) features the world's tallest trees and an impressive diversity of nature.     Humboldt Redwoods State Park
    This unique environment includes the largest remaining old growth redwood forest in the world. Facilities include family camps, environmental camps, group camps, trail camps, and a horse camp. Over 100 miles of trail await exploration by hikers, bikers, and horse riders. The South Fork Eel River provides fishing, boating, and swimming opportunities.

    Patrick's Point State Park

    A dramatic shoreline ranging from broad sandy beaches to sheer cliffs that rise high above the Pacific Ocean offers great opportunities to explore tide pools, search for agates and driftwood, watch whales, sea lions and brilliant sunsets. See also a recreated Yurok Village, a native plant garden, visitor center, and three family campgrounds.

    Harry Merlo State Recreation Area
    North Humboldt County

    Adjacent to Humboldt Lagoons State Park, this area is a popular place for visitors who like to fish.

    Arcata Plaza The Plaza has a green lawn, extensive flower plantings, and at its center a statue of President McKinley. The Plaza is surrounded by stores, bars, coffee shops, restaurants, and live music venues.
