Trinidad Head Lighthouse was built on the Trinidad Harbor in 1871 and was automated by the US Coast Guard in 1974.
The light is only 20 feet above ground, but the headland on which it stands gives it an elevation of 196 feet above the sea.
This lighthouse location is one of the most picturesque on the California coast. Despite the great height of the tower above the sea,
heavy seas have been known to reach it.
The Trinidad Head Light Station (1720) is a National Registered Landmark, which is located on Trinidad Head.
Trinidad is noted for its spectacular coastline with ten public beaches and offshore rocks. These rocks are part of the
California Coastal National Monument of which Trinidad is a Gateway City.
This natural landmark is joined by three additional marine landmarks - the historic Trinidad Head Light,
the Trinidad Memorial Lighthouse, and Humboldt State University's Fred Telonicher Marine Laboratory.
California Coastal National Monument
Established in 2000, the CCNM runs the entire length of the California coast
and encompasses thousands of BLM administered islands, rocks, exposed reefs,
and pinnacles above mean high tide. These provide forage and breeding grounds for
significant populations of coastal birds and sea mammals.
