There are 97 parishes and 13 missions serving approximately 1 million catholics in the area. Organized into the six vicariates: Hemet, High Desert, Low Desert, Riverside, San Bernardino and West End. There are 32 Elementary schools (Diocesan, Parish and Private) and 2 High Schools. There are also two Catholic hospitals: St. Bernardine Medical Center in San Bernardino and St. Mary Regional Medical Center in Apple Valley. The diocese was created in 1978, but the oldest parish here dates back to 1862 (St Bernadine).
