Mormon history traces back to Jan 25, 1847 when the Mormon Battalion entered the Temecula Valley. There they encountered the Luiseno Indians just shortly after the Temecula Massacre. In Temecula the battalion received word of change of their final destination from Los Angeles to San Diego. In 1847/1848, Company C of the Mormon Battalion was dispatched to guard the key entrance of the Cajon Pass under the command of Captain Jefferson Hunt. Members of this group would later pioneer the road to Salt Lake (Today's Interstate-15) and the development of the mail route to Southern California.
A contingent of over 430 Mormon pioneers arrived at a Sycamore Grove in Devore on 11 June 1851. David Seely was group leader and former Mormon Battalion officer, Captain Jefferson Hunt, was their guide. Church apostles Amasa M. Lyman and Charles C. Rich joined the group. By at its height in 1857 this group numbered over 3000. On 6 July 1851, before their permanent residence was established, the group was organized as a LDS Stake with David Seely as President and William Crosby as Bishop. This colony was able to acquire over 40,000 acres of San Bernardino Rancho land from the Lugos Brothers for $77,500. The saints (as was their style in colonizing Utah) constructed a large fortress stockade as a refuge from marauders and indians. San Bernardino County was formed from Los Angeles County in 1853 based on Assemblyman Jefferson Hunt's bill. Since then to this day, San Bernardino is the largest county by territory in the contiguous 48 states. The City of San Bernardino was first incorporated on April 1, 1854. Mormon Apostle Amasa M. Lyman was the City's first Mayor. Apostle Charles Coulson Rich became the second Mayor. At incorporation, there were approximately 1,200 residents, 900 of them Mormons. They dominated local politics and forbade drinking and gambling. Mormons created the first timber road to the mountains, and a flour mill (on Mill Street). In 1855, they diverted water from Waterman Canyon to Town Creek by means of a flume. A temple block was designated in the center of the newly-laid out town between present-day 5th, 6th, E, and F Streets, but no temple was ever built. A small Jewish community formed in Mormon San Bernardino, including Lewis Jacobs and Marcus Katz in 1852. Services began in the 1850s, but Congregation Emanuel, still active today, was not officially chartered until 1891, and its first structure was built in 1921. The Home of Eternity Cemetery was given by the Mormons to the Jews. It is the oldest Jewish cemetery in continuous use in Southern California. The colony was discontinued in 1857 when the Saints were recalled to protect Utah from the impending invasion by Johnson's Army. Though many of these pioneers quickly returned or remained in place, no LDS churches were reestablished until the 1920s. The remaining residents lacked organization and resources to compensate for the mass departure of the predominant Mormon population, which devastated the local economy and the City disincorporated.
