Truckee California (pop: 13,800) is a mountain pass town in Nevada County. Truckee was named after a Paiute chief. His Paiute name was Tru-ki-zo. The Donner Party was snowbound and resorted to cannibalism near the site that would later become Truckee. Many of the area's place names come from this group. Truckee is the home of Donner Lake and the Donner Memorial State Park. Truckee grew as a railroad town originally named Colburn Station, starting with the Transcontinental Railroad. The railroad goes into downtown Truckee and the Amtrak passenger lines still stop there on the services from Chicago to San Francisco. |
