is not a major sector of the local economy - largely due to the region's remote location.
Alturas California
Alturas was founded on the sight of an ancient indian village and is the
only incorporated city in Modoc County and is an important trade center for regional
agriculture operations.
Surprise Valley
Susprise Valley consists of the cattle ranching area surrounding Cedarville.
Fort Bidwell is situated at the northern tip of this valley and Eaglesville marks the southern
end. Cedarville is Home to the Modoc County Fair in August.
Goose Lake
A large shallow lake located across the state border of Oregon and Northeastern California.
Goose Lake attracts wildlife watchers, campers and boaters. It is habitat to many flora and fauna including a large herd of mule deer.

Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge
Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge Complex
Encompasses 39,116 acres of mostly open water and
croplands. Approximately 17,000 acres are leased by farmers under a program administered
by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. These crops, together with the waste grain and potatoes from
the lease program are a major food source for migrating and wintering waterfowl.
Modoc National Forest
Much of California's remote northeastern corner is included in the Modoc National Forest.
There are many mountains, lakes, meadows and significant wetlands here. The area
is also rich in wildlife and geological formations.
Popular activies include hiking, equestrian trails, fishing and cross-country skiing.
Cedar Pass Snow Park
For people of all ages who enjoy skiing and snowboarding, Cedar Pass is a community
sponsored project that offers a warm, small-town atmosphere reminiscent of the early days of skiing.
Nordic Skiiers will find trailheads here to backcountry ski trails.

Modoc County Historical Museum - Alturas CA
Many exhibits related to local history that includes an interest specimens from
the Native Americans and historic pieces of firearms dating from the 15th century to World War II.

Modoc National Wildlife Refuge - Alturas CA
Fed by snowmelt from the Warner Mountains, the Pit River creates an oasis for wildlife in the high desert of northeastern California.
One in a chain of National wildlife refuges along the Pacific Flyway extending from Alaska to Mexico,
this spot is an important resting and feeding area for migratory birds.
Goose Lake
Goose Lake State Recreation Area is a green and shady lakeside destination of wildlife and wildlife watchers on the Oregon-California border.
Its grassy expanse also makes it an inviting place to camp or find boating access.
It is home to many species of birds and other wildlife including a large herd of mule deer which spend much of the time in the 48-site campground.
Shasta Sunset Dinner Train - Mt Shasta CA
