Dorris (pop: 886 / elev 4245) is located midway between Mt. Shasta and the Oregon Border on Hwy 97. The city of Dorris boasts having The Tallest Flagpole West of the Mississippi River.
The neighboring community of Macdoel shares the same rural lifestyle as the good folks in Dorris. Ranching and farming are abundant in the rich basin land which
also supports plentiful wildlife including birds, fowl, deer, and antelope.
Butte Valley, an area of about 130 Square miles which includes the city of Dorris,
and the communities of Macdoel and Mt. Hebron, has dropped down between faults in this volcanic area and is completely surrounded by volcanoes.

The Cal-Ore Chariot Club holds chariot races every Sunday at 1:00 from the first weekend of December to the first weekend of March.
Once a year they have the Tri-State Invitational which involves at least three clubs, Richfield, Idaho;
Ashland, Oregon; Wells, Nevada and the Cal-Ore Chariot Club from Macdoel.

Butte Valley National Grasslands
Location: northern Siskiyou County between Dorris and Macdoel along Highway US-97;
14,250 acre grasslands reserves dedicated in July 1991 as the nation's 20th National Grassland. It is administered as part of the Klamath National Forest along the Klamath River Basin.
This area provides abundant birdwatching oppurtunities for Sage Thrasher and Brewer’s Sparrow in the spring, summer and fall.
Resident bird species include the Horned Lark and Lark Sparrow. Nesting raptors include Golden Eagle, Prairie Falcon, Red-tailed Hawk
and Swainson’s Hawk, drawn by resident rodents in the fields. Ferruginous Hawk have successfully nested in recent years.
