This region has witnessed many violent volcanic eruptions over the last half-million years. Many diverse and fascinating volcanic features now mark the landscape. Park features include more than 700 caves, Native American rock art sites, and historic battlefields. An exciting California high desert adventure.

Most of the lava formations are result of lava flows from Mammoth and Modoc Craters These flows have been dated to about 30,000-40,000 years ago.

    Captain Jack's Stronghold
    Modoc War Battlefield

Location: Northern boundary of park near Tule Lake
During the Modoc War of 1872-1873, a small band of Modoc Indians, led by Kintpuash (Captain Jack), helded a serious tactical advantage over the US Cavalry. Finding refuge in a a natural lava fortress they held off a far superior opponent for five months.

    Lava Tube Caves

Probably one of the most bizarre geological features in California are the many lava tube caves. Though many are hidden in the wilderness, some caves have ladders and trails, and vary from easy walks to strenuous excursions. Temperate and moist year round, caves are often very different from the outside world, forming “micro-climates” full of fascinating life such as bats, ferns, and sparkling bacteria. Visitors should always have warm clothing, sturdy boots, gloves, and protective headgear available if they plan to visit the lava tube caves. Park rangers hold regular guided tours of Crystal Ice Cave and Fern Cave.

Most of the caves are found along Cave Loop Road which starts from the Visitors Center on the south side of the park.

    Lava Bed Wilderness
Lava Beds provides an opportunity to escape the sights and sounds of everyday life and encounter untamed wildlife in rugged landscapes. Wildflowers bursting from stark black lava flows, hawks soaring overhead, crisp dry air, and nobody in sight.

    Indian Well Campground
Location: Southend of park - downhill from Visitors Center
This 43-site campground features an amphitheater, two restrooms, and ample supplies of drinking water. It was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, and features the original historic hand-built lava stone picnic tables they constructed.

    Wilderness Trails
    Backpacking adventure opportunities:

    • Three Sisters Trail - 12 mile trail that crosses through the eastern wilderness area of the park.
    • Lyons Trail - 12 mile trail that crosses through the eastern wilderness area of the park.
    • Whitney Butte Trail - 3.3 mile trail that ascends 5,004 foot Whitney Butte in the western park wildernes area.
