Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, the primary West Coast base of the United States Marine Corps, has served as their prinicipal amphibious training base since 1942. It is named after Marine General Joseph Henry Pendleton, and today it is the home to a myriad of Fleet Marine Force units including the 1st Marine Division and various training commands.

Before its acquisition by the military, this area was originally part of the Mexican 1821 land grant for a cattle ranch named Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores.

The largest amphibious training facility in the nation, Camp Pendleton covers 17 miles of Pacific coastline north of Oceanside. It is home to 35,000 active duty Marines and their dependents of the U.S. 1st Marine Division and related units. Visitors may tour during daylight hours - enter thru the Main Gate off the I-5 Freeway.

While many military bases share one or more of Camp Pendleton's training features, none match its broad spectrum. Camp Pendleton has a population of nearly 40,000 Marines and Sailors and provides a variety of services and recreational activities.

Part of the NWS Seal Beach Command (which includes Detachments in Concord, Corona, and Fallbrook) exists to provide weapons storage, loading, maintenance, assessment and support to ships and submarines of the United States Pacific Fleet. Our facilities also support Coast Guard vessels and Marine Corps units stationed afloat and ashore. NWS Fallbrook uses helicopters to transfer weapons from its 187 storage magazine bunkers to ships waiting offshore. It is also the only West Coast Air-launched missile production and storage facility.

In order to come aboard base, be ready to show identification, proof of insurance and proof of registration at the gate. In addition to the driving self-tour of significant sites, two museums are available for one-and-a-half hour tours on the base.

Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton is a 123 bed facility, overlooking Lake O'Neill and is located approximately 10 miles from the main gate at Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, CA. In addition, six Marine Corps medical clinics are supported by the Naval Hospital and staffed by First Marine Expeditionary Force and subordinate commands' medical staff. Administers clinics at MCAS Yuma, NB Ventura, MCLB Barstow, MWTC Bridgeport.

Landing Craft Museum
The World War II and Korea LVT Museum is located in Building 21561 in the base's boat basin and is maintained by the Assault Amphibious School Battalion. To visit the vintage amphibious tracked vehicles, related artifacts and informational displays contact the school at 725-2195. The museum is normally open Tuesdays through Sundays in the early afternoons.

The Ranch House Complex -
Historic Home of Governor Pio Pico
Includes the Ranch House Chapel, the oldest structure on the base, the Bunkhouse Museum, dedicated in 1965 by Col James Roosevelt, and the Ranch House, built in the mid 1800s. It was the home of Pio Pico, last Mexican governor of California, and succeeding owners Don Juan Forster, the O'Neills, Floods, Baumgartners and, finally, the United States Government. Historic artifacts at the Complex document Camp Pendleton history from pre-history through Mission and Rancho periods to the 1942 purchase of Camp Pendleton and present times. Exhibits include early ranch equipment, photographs of President Roosevelt's historic visit, antiques donated by Anthony Quinn during the filming of "Guadalcanal Diary" in 1943 and furnishings of the Rancho period. The historic Ranch House, Museum and Chapel are listed as a National Historic Site. It is through the gracious hospitality of the Commanding General residing in the home that tours are made available. Tours are booked for Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. between the last week in September to the end of May.
