27 Jan 1847 marked an important event for the Mormon Battalion on their epic 1100-mile six-month military march during the Mexican-American War. That was the date they reached the Mission San Luis Rey and by ascending a nearby hill were able to catch their first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean. From here they would follow El Camino Real south and just two days later complete their historic march in Old Town San Diego. Previously they had crossed the desert in Imperial Valley with no water and little food. After cutting a wagon road through Box Canyon they would find relief at Warner Springs Ranch. From there they began marching upwards towards Los Angeles, getting as far as Temecula before being ordered to turn south to San Diego by General Kearney. On 3 Feb 1847, the Battalion return to Mission San Luis Rey and established their main base here. The mission had been founded by Franciscan Priests to serve Luiseno Indians living in the area, but by this time had been abandoned and fallen into disrepair. This location was critical to address potential threats such as rebels in Los Angeles, a Mexican counter-attack from down south or Indian renegades from the mountains. While various companies were deployed to various posts in Los Angeles, Cajon Pass or San Diego, Company A would remain here until the soldier's 12-month enlistment expired in July.
