Mission San Antonio de Pala

Located 6 miles east of I-15 on SR-76. Museum, gift shop and wilderness gardens. San Antonio de Pala was a sub-mission of Mission San Luis Rey de Francia. Chapel built in 1816 in heart of small trading post for the Pala Indian Reservation. The bell tower is striking in that it is detached from the building; unusual in the mission system.

The Cupans were one of the smallest native American tribes in Southern California. It is unlikely that they ever numbered more than 1000 in size. They once occupied a territory 10 square miles in diameter in a mountainous region at the headwaters of the San Luis Rey River in the valley of San Jose de Valle. Many of the Pala Indians trace their heritage back to Cupa. Before 1810, the Cupans had very little contact with outsiders --- Spanish or otherwise.
