    First Farmer of California

One of the first Mormons to settle in Alameda County was John Horner and his family. A pioneer on the Brooklyn, Horner built a farm on land near Mission San Jose in Fremont in March 1847.

John Horner became very wealthy selling food to 49ers during the gold rush days in 1848-1850. He built a schoolhouse that is widely regarded as the first LDS meetinghouse in Claifornia.

At the 1852 state agricultural exposition, John Horner was recognized for his farming successes and was labeled the First Farmer of California.
