A prominent and famous landmark is the majestic Oakland Temple. Standing 170 feet tall on eighteen acres of the Berkeley Hills is this great white stone building with its gold tinted central steeple. Directly in front is the stone pool, flower gardens and walkways that hosts impressive views of the greater East Bay. This temple was completed in 1964 with dedication by President David O. McKay, making it the 13th operating temple of the LDS Church and the second of seven temples completed in California.

One of the first Mormons to settle in Alameda County was John Horner and his family. A pioneer on the Brooklyn, Horner built a farm on land near Mission San Jose in Fremont in March 1847. John Horner became very wealthy selling food to 49ers during the gold rush days in 1848-1850. He built a schoolhouse that is widely regarded as the first LDS meetinghouse in Claifornia. At the 1852 state agricultural exposition, John Horner was recognized for his farming successes and was labeled the First Farmer of California.
