Mission San Juan Capistrano
Capistrano Mission Basilica
Mission San Juan Capistrano is the seventh mission founded November 1, 1776, by early Franciscan priests. Today it is a monument to California’s multicultural history, embracing its Native American, Spanish, Mexican and European heritage. In 1986 Mission Basilica was completed adjacent.

Local Catholic history dates back to 1776 and the founding of the San Juan Capistrano Mission. The church saw continual expansion over the next two centuries until 1976, when His Holiness Pope Paul VI established the Diocese of Orange with The Most Reverend William R. Johnson installed as First Bishop of Orange.
