Crescent City became the county seat of Del Norte County when the county was formed in 1857.
Originally miners comprised many of the inhabitants. Mining activity in the region quickly waned and was replaced by logging and fishing industries
in the early 20th century, which have also recently experienced decline. In the 1990s, Pelican Bay State Prison was built and was then joined with the city.

Castle Rock is an island located a half mile offshore of Crescent City, California.
A 14-acre offshore rock with steep cliffs and sparse vegetation - The refuge is not open to public access.
Established in 1981 to protect an important migration staging area of the endangered Aleutian Canada goose.
Second largest seabird breeding colony in California.
Haul-out for a variety of marine mammals, including California sea lion, Stellar sea lion and northern elephant seal.
