The 123rd operating temple of the LDS Church features a classic-modern, single-spire design built with a light gray granite exterior on a site just outside Sacramento overlooking Lake Natoma adjacent to the Folsom LDS Stake Center. The 47-acre hilltop property is surrounded by majestic oak trees with scenic views of the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains and is the 7th Mormon Temple completed in California. This temple was dedicated in September 2006 by President Gordon B Hinckley. Temple Photo Gallery

Rhoads Family PioneersIn 1846/1847, Brigham Young led the main body of the Mormon Church westward. Many church members attempted other enterprising ways to make their west. One was Thomas Rhoads and his family. Rhoads was a Mormon convert living in Missouri after the Mormon extermination order there. In 1846 they came to California in the same wagon company as hated ex-governor Lilburn Boggs, traveling across the Sierra Nevada just a few weeks ahead of the ill-fated Donner Party. This group settled somewhere east of Sutter's Fort. Two sons were involved in the efforts to rescue the Donner Party. The family also discovered gold well ahead of the famous discovery by John Marshall at Sutter's Mill. Brown's TavernLegendary Mormon frontiersman, Orrin Porter Rockwell, came to this region during the years of the gold rush. He found the hard work of gold mining distasteful, and soon opened three California Saloons, including one named Brown's Settlement or Brown's Tavern on Alder Creek, located about two miles south of Folsom. He used the alias of Brown since there were many former Missourians in the region who accused him of attempting to kill Governor Boggs a decade earlier. Brown's Settlement was used frequently for LDS church meetings held amongst the gold miners in this area. Apostles Lyman and Rich visited here frequently. Early Mormon Settlers
