    Tour Cleveland National Forest

    Southern most of protected forest lands in California includes 430,000 acres of San Diego, Orange and Riverside divided into three distinct areas. Comprises of conifer woodlands and chaparral. The Kumeyaay, Luiseņos, Cahuilla and Cupeņo found a good living on the abundant acorns and game. Many of our trails today follow those routes first used by these early dwellers. The popular driving loop to see the best of Cleveland N.F. is to follow Sunrise Highway (County Hwy-S1) up past Mount Laguna.

    El Capitan Reservoir

    Directions: Use I-8 exit north on Lake Jennings Park Road, turn east on El Monte Road, about 8 miles to the entrance. From the entrance it's about 2.5 miles to the concession/launch area.

    El Capitan Reservoir has the largest capacity in the City of San Diego Lakes system. It has public access for swimming, boating, and fishing. It's located approximately 30 miles northeast of downtown San Diego, on the San Diego River. When full, the reservoir has 1,562 surface acres, a maximum water depth of 197 feet, and 22 miles of shoreline. El Capitan Reservoir has Florida-strain largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, blue catfish, green sunfish, and carp. El Capitan allows both waterskiing and wakeboarding and use of personal watercraft such as jetskis.

    El Capitan County Preserve
    A east county landmark, 3675-ft elevation El Capitan Mountain provides for a strenous hiking challenge. Sheer south escarpment resembles its namesake from Yosemite Park.

    El Monte County Park - Lakeside CA
    The spectacular rocky face of El Cajon Mountain rises high over this park, dominating the other mountains that encircle this valley. El Monte is one of the original County parks and one of the most popular.

    Loveland Reservoir, near Alpine, has a capacity of 25,400 acre feet. Its dam is 203 feet high and 765 feet wide, and was completed in 1945. Loveland Reservoir serves as a holding area for water which is released to Sweetwater Dam. Loveland Reservoir is open for shore fishing.
