Mormon Battalion Visitors Center -
Old Town San Diego
Church operated museum commerating the 1847 completion of the longest infantry march in US History, over 2000 miles from Council Bluffs, Iowa to San Diego. The Mormon Battalion consisted of five companies that totaled over 500 men. Multimedia presentations, historic artifacts including authentic muskets, cannon, and fine artwork.

Southern California Mormon Choir
Established in 1953, this 100-voice choral ensemble regularly does concerts featuring classical, sacred, folk, patriotic and popular choral music throughout Southern California.

Third temple completed in California (dedicated 1993 by Pres Hinckley), The San Diego Temple is located near La Jolla Village. Visitors can tour the temple grounds and the nearby Mormon Battalion Visitors Center in Old Town.

LDS Temple Christmas Lights and Concert Program [DEC]
During December, the facade of the landmark Latter-day Saint temple in La Jolla is decorated with thousands of twinkling lights. Outdoor christmas musical program is featured most evenings at 7PM.

San Diego Temple District
This temple serves Latter-Day Saints in all of San Diego County, Baja California Mexico and even the Northwest Corner of Sonora Mexico.

Mormon Battalion

At the height of the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), the U.S. Army organized its only all faith-based military fighting unit in Western Iowa. It consisted of 600 Mormon refugees who had just recently been evicted from their homes by religious prejudice. This created an opportunity for the Mormons to earn hard cash to finance their move to a new home in the Great Salt Lake Family.

This military unit was part of General Kearney's Army of the West and completed a 1500 mile, six-month march across the western United States. It's arrival in San Diego on January 29, 1847 marked the completion of the longest forced infantry march in military history.

This unit was the largest military unit deployed to Southern California and gave the American a decisive advantage to capture hold the territory for inclusion in the United States. The various companies in the battalion were deployed to guard forts at key locations in the area.

At least one company stayed behind in San Diego to guard against a possible counter-attack from Mexico. This unit engaged in construction of public works projects until they were released from service in July 1847.

Mormon Battalion Historic Sites
Monuments relating to the battalion are also located in New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado, and trail markers have been placed on segments of the battalion route between Mt. Pisgah (Iowa) and San Diego. The following landmarks are found in California:

Early California Population Project [ECPP]

A collections-based research and educational institution established in 1919 by Henry E. and Arabella Huntington. ECPP provides public access to all the information contained in California's historic mission registers. Records include baptism, marriage and burial records for each of the California missions. Records include information on Indians, soldiers, and settlers of Alta California from 1769-1850.

Organized as the 360th stake of the LDS Church on 21 Oct 1962 with Cecil I. Burningham as first stake president.
