Welcome to Coronado Island

Coronado is a peninsula connected to the mainland by a 10 mile narrow strip of land called the Silver Strand Local residents often refer to Coronado as The Island and they denote the core living and business area as The Village.

Originally Coronado was separated from North Island by a shallow channel called the Spanish Bight. The development of North Island by the United States Navy prior to World War II led to the filling of the Bight, combining the land areas into a single body.

In 1969, the state of California completed highwar SR-75 across the San Diego-Coronado Bridge allowing much faster travel between the cities than bay ferries or driving along the Silver Strand.

Tijuana River Refuge
Historic beach front site contains much of the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve, an important wildlife habitat. The salt and freshwater marshes give refuge to migrating waterfowl and resident wading birds, such as black-necked stilt, avocet, teal, American widgeon and pelican. The park offers hiking, horse trails, surf fishing and birding.

Silver Strand State Beach
Following along the isthmus connecting Coronado Island to Imperial Beach with extensive beachfront facilities on both the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay. Combined with the area’s mild climate, the beaches make Silver Strand one of the area’s finest recreation destinations. Camping, fishing, swimming, surfing, boating, water-skiing, volleyball, and picnicking are popular activities. Anglers can fish for perch, corbina, grunion and yellow-fin croaker.

Overlooking San Diego Bay and the city skyline is a collection of shops, restaurants and art galleries.

Coronado Village
Encompasses the downtown Coronado area west towards the Hotel Del Coronado. It is a dense concentration of restaurants, hotels, shops and entertainment venues.

North Island NAS California
US Naval base on northern half of Coronado Island, home to air units and homeport for big aircraft carriers.

San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum
The USS Midway was the longest-serving carrier in the history of the U.S. Navy. Today she has embarked as a museum, tribute and education center. This museum features over 28 exhibits and excess to many important areas of this great warship.

The Maritime Museum
The Maritime Museum of San Diego features one of the finest collections of historic ships in the world, including; the world’s oldest active ship Star of India. This historic 1863 three-masted vessel sailing ship that has completed many voyages around the world.

The San Diego Zoo
