This vacation resort enclave is located on an oversize sandbank of San Diego Bay that was developed in the 1950s. It is home to resort hotels, restaurants, theater, yacht clubs and public parkland. Shelter Island is a popular sightseeing destination with outstanding views of San Diego Bay and the city Skyline.

Shelter Island is a famous destination for seeing superyachts because it contains one of the few marinas in San Diego Bay with a deep enough harbor for these oversized vessels. The annual YachtFest, spotlighting superyachts, is held at Shelter Island Marina every September. The event also features mock gunbattles between two replicas of 19th century tall ships from the collection of the San Diego Maritime Museum.
Home of the America's Cup from 1988 to 1995 and hosted three America's Cup races during that time. Club facility has a main dining room and outdoor seating, a bar, a library, a swimming pool, tennis courts, and a pavilion equipped with a barbecue. The club hosts multiple fleets, many of which race regularly. There are fleets of Lehman 12s, PCs, Stars, Etchells, and an adult Sabot fleet. There is also a model yacht fleet which races CR914s. Most of the larger boats race outside of San Diego Bay in the Pacific Ocean.
This club has hosted a Wheelchair Regatta for the physically disabled every year since 1960. Other activities include a youth sailing program as well as fine dining, dancing and parties.
Since 1925 the Club has developed into a full-service operation with nearly 750 members embracing all forms of yachting, fishing and social activities. SWYC is proud to support a number of community events including the Special Olympics Sailing Program, the Junior Sailing Foundation, the White Sea Bass Release project and other charitable programs.
