    History of the San Diego Padres:

  • 1936 - Arrival: - The Padres were the first professional team to play for San Diego. Before then there were only sporadic exhibition games played at Balboa Stadium and Sports Field (neither one designed for a baseball diamond). The Padres were part of the Pacific Coast League.
  • Lane Field (1936-1957): - Located on the San Diego Bay at the foot of Broadway, the Padres played 22 seasons here.
  • Westgate Park (1958-1967): - Located at the northeast corner of present day Fashion Valley Shopping Center. At the time it was recognized as one of the most beautiful stadiums for a minor league team.
  • Qualcomm Stadium (1967-2003): - Completed in 1967 with enough capacity so that Padres could become a major league franchise team and also to relocate the Chargers Football team from decaying Balboa Stadium. First named San Diego Stadium and the Jack Murphy Stadium in honor of the San Diego Union sports writer who led the bond raising effort to build the stadium.

    Unique Stadium Features:
    Home Run Porch - Bleacher section that protruds forward directly behind the right-field foul pole. It has the potential to create some easy home runs or some bizarre fielding plays.
    The Sea Breeze - On a normal day the afternoon prevailing wind will be blowing from left field to right at about 10 mph. It diminishes after dusk.
    Sun Block - The stadiums concourse design will play games with the setting sun shining through gaps in the decking and might hamper the fielders' vision.
    Outfield Bleachers - The cheapest place to watch a game - seats tickets start at $8.
    FriarVision - 30x53 foot state-of-the-art high resolution LED display will provide awesome clean, clear video of the action. Cox Communications and Sony has placed about 220 HDTV sets throughout the stadium to showcase this new technology.
    Tower Lofts - For just $1900 you can get a private suite for yourself and 19 friends midway up one of those giant light towers. A private elevator drops you into a glass-enclosed suite with plush chairs and hardwood floors. Amenities include your own wetbar, restroom and big screen high-definition TV sets. These tower lofts can some impressive skyline views (the first base tower loft views are best).

    Western Metal Supply Bldg:
    Look for the Metal Magnet in the left stands (actually its impossible to miss). This four-story brick building is a local historic landmark originally built in 1909 to house the now-defunct Western Metal Supply Co. Located 334 feet from home plate, the south corner of the building serves as the left-field foul pole. It has been refurbished into a major landmark at Petco Park with some of the following features:
    Rooftop Bleacher Seats - 180 reserved seats (priced at $60 each which includes a pre-game buffet) and standing room along the front rail.
    Padres Hall of Fame Bar & Grill - Fourth floor restaurant (only open on game days) with terrace dining and views of the field.
    Garden Level - Seven party suites fill the third floor level. The party suite packages start at about $1200 and includes food and beverage service.
    Main Concourse - Five second floor party suites with amenities similar to the Garden Level.
    Padres Team Store - First floor facility features standing-room view of left field.

    Stadium Clubhouse:
    Stadium Clubhouses for the home team and the visitors will be out of view to the general public but already have the reputation of being amongst the finest in the county. Each is located under the Field Level seats directly behind the respective dugouts with an adjoining 40-cubicle locker room. Other player amenities include 7,580 sq ft weight training room, medical offices, kitchen, video room, manager's office, laundry, storage and indoor batting cages. There is also an auxilary locker froom for umpires, VIP dressing room, underground garage, media interview room and team lounge for player spouses. Players are especially impressed with "the pool", a Hydroworx jetted pool with a treadmill on the floor, cameras in the walls and overhead.

    PCL Bar & Grill - Terrace dining overlooking the gamefield with memorabilia from the Padres PCL years.
