Tecate is an unincorporated rural community directly adjacent to the Mexican city of Tecate. The area is best known for its relatively uncrowded border crossing between the United States and Mexico, and nearby Tecate Peak.

Tour Cleveland National Forest

Southern most of protected forest lands in California includes 430,000 acres of San Diego, Orange and Riverside divided into three distinct areas. Comprises of conifer woodlands and chaparral. The Kumeyaay, Luiseņos, Cahuilla and Cupeņo found a good living on the abundant acorns and game. Many of our trails today follow those routes first used by these early dwellers. The popular driving loop to see the best of Cleveland N.F. is to follow Sunrise Highway (County Hwy-S1) up past Mount Laguna.

Lake Morena County Park
Because of its location southwest of the Laguna Mountains, this 3,250 acre park shows characteristics of desert, coastal, and mountain habitats. This chaparral woodland is home to a variety of animals. The big feature is Morena Reservoir, which is popular for boating, fishing and other watersports.

San Diego Railroad Museum
Large collection of vintage locomotives and railcars. Public tours of work shops available. Train rides run twice a day on Sat/Sun (and some holidays) departing at noon and 2:30PM on a 16-mile loop pulled by a vintage diesel or steam locomotive. Once or twice a month a special 3-hour excursion runs to Tecate, Mexico.

Barrett Lake

Located at the confluence of Cottonwood and Pine Valley Creek, Barrett Reservoir is in a remote area approximately 35 miles east of San Diego. Access is restricted. This water reservoir is also a protected fishery for northern-strain largemouth black bass. Float tubes, canoes, and kayaks are permitted, but a reservation is still required. Barrett is open for waterfowl hunting on Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the season established for the Southern California Zone.

Potrero County Park

At 2300 ft elevation, Potrero is a camping and recreation park. Much of the 115-acre park consists of picnic areas. Visitors can also enjoy ball fields, a dance pavilion, playgrounds, and hiking trails. grassy meadow and rocky hillsides provide quiet solitude for hikers and campers, and picnickers will enjoy the shade of hundred-year-old oak trees. Rare predators such as mountain lions and bobcats are seen occasionally. Some of the more conspicuous animal residents include mule deer, coyotes, raccoons, striped and spotted skunks, and brush rabbits.
