The Brooklyn Saints - 1846On 31 July 1846, the Brooklyn with nearly 180 mormon pioneers arrived in San Francisco Bay just three weeks after US Warships claimed this part of California for the USA during the course of the Mexican-American War. This group was led by 26-year-old Samuel Brannon whose name is found on of the major downtown streets today. The Brooklyn Saints was the largest religious pilgrimage of its age, with twice the member, traveling nearly 24,000 months over a six month period from New York City on a charter boat. They would make both the first Anglo-American and also Mormon settlement in the Western United States. This group of Mormon pioneers consisted of members from all across the northeastern United State who had sought a cost effective way to link with the main exodus of Mormons moving to the Great Salt Lake Valley in Utah. They predated the arrival of that group by nearly a whole year. Upon their arrival Samuel Brannon is quoted of saying, "that darn flag is here too?" However, this group would readily sware allegience to the Stars and Stripes. Bro Brannon later traveled east to meet Brigham Young in the main exodus in an effort to convince him to lead the saints all the way to California where the climate was more pleasant. Twenty men from this group attempted to start a farm called New Hope near Stockton. With the discovery of gold in early 1848, many members abandoned the branch and rushed to work the gold fields. Many of their properties were acquired by newly arrived Chinese immigrants and this area would become Chinatown as we know it today. Quite a few of the principle streets here still retain Mormon names - Brannon, Brooklyn, Joice, Glover, Pratt, Corwin, etc. Other than the Portsmouth School very few pioneer landmarks remain today.
