The Huntington Library
Library, Art Galleries and Botanical Gardens
A collections-based research and educational institution established in 1919 by Henry E. and Arabella Huntington.
Henry Huntington, a key figure in the development of Southern California in the early 20th century,
was also an active collector of rare books and manuscripts, art, and plants.
The institution serves some 1,800 scholars each year conducting advanced research in the humanities.

Completed about 1816 as a grist mill for Mission San Gabriel, the original two-story structure measured 53 by 26 feet.
It is the oldest commercial building in Southern California.
The lower walls are five feet thick and are composed of oven-baked brick and volcanic tuff, while the walls of the
upper level are built of layers of sun-dried adobe slabs.
