El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park

This 1782 Spanish military fortress isthe oldest building in Santa Barbara and the second oldest in California.
Visitors can step back and view this historic site surrounded by modern buildings.
El Cuartel, the oldest existing building in Santa Barbara, is all that remains of the last of four Royal Presidios (Spanish military outposts) built in Alta California.
Historic structures in El Presidio include;
- El Cuartel - Built 1782, is the second-oldest surviving structure in California
- The Buenaventura Pico adobe - an example of a Mexican period adobe built circa 1830.
- The Rochín adobe - an example of an American period adobe built in 1856 by José María Rochín.
- Canedo Adobe - another surviving section of the Presidio - named after the Presidio soldier to whom it was deeded when the Presidio became inactive.

Santa Barbara's rich multicultural history is represented with artifacts from Chumash, Spanish, Mexican, "Yankee" and Chinese culture.
The Gledhill Library contains rare literary and visual documents including 50,000 historic photographs.
Two early 19th century buildings, the 1817 Casa Covarrubias and the 1836 Historic Adobe are adjacent to the Museum.
