Established in 2000, the California Coastal National Monument runs the entire length of the
California coast (1,100 miles) between Oregon and Mexico, extends 12 nautical miles from the shoreline, and encompasses
thousands of BLM administered islands, rocks, exposed reefs, and pinnacles above mean high tide.
Cooperatively managed with other federal, state, local government, universities, and private interests,
the primary purpose of the Monument is to protect important biological and geological values. The islands, rocks, reefs,
and pinnacles provide forage and breeding grounds for significant populations of
birds and sea mammals.
California Whale Watching Tours : Jan-Mar
From January through March, some 28,000 Pacific Gray Whales make their annual migration up along
the coast to their summer Alaska feeding grounds. During the summer Blue and Humpback Whales also
come to visit the local waters delighting visitors with upclose encounters.
California has several major world class aquarium exhibits and a number of lessor ones
with a major emphasis on exploring life and habitat of the California Coastline.

Castle Rock National Wildlife Refuge
Castle Rock is an island located a half mile offshore of Crescent City, California.
A 14-acre offshore rock with steep cliffs and sparse vegetation - The refuge is not open to public access.
Established in 1981 to protect an important migration staging area of the endangered Aleutian Canada goose.
Second largest seabird breeding colony in California.
Orange County Ocean Institute - Dana Point CA
To learn about oceanography, science, and California history, students voyage onto the ocean, study in labs and
live aboard tall ships or in the chaparral, where they can feel and taste the salty sea spray, sort through live specimens,
observe migrating whales, collect scientific data and investigate the culture and world around them.
Birch Aquarium - La Jolla
Located adjacent to the world-renown Scripps Institute of Oceanography
this facility has large salt-water aquariums primarily dedicated to the
study of both cold water and tropical water marine life of the
Pacific Ocean. Includes giant octopus, jelly-fish, garibaldi,
kelp forest and live coral. Several educational exhibits.
Channel Islands National Park
The islands are accessible only by aircraft or boat. But, the park
visitors center is located on the mainland shore
in Ventura. Designated as national parkland in 1980, The park consists of principally
five islands: Anacapa, Santa Barbara, San Miguel, Santa Cruz (largest)
and Santa Rosa.
Redwood National Park
The Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP) features an impressive diversity of nature.
Considered as one of the most unique ecosystems on our planet where there is a serene balance
between ancient coast redwood groves, gray whales, black bears, banana slugs and much more.
Includes Del Norte, Jedediah Smith and Prairie Creek Redwoods State Parks.
Tolowa Dunes State Park - Crescent City
California State Park is open from sunrise to sunset year round.
This park takes in some of the finest wetlands habitat on California’s northern coast.
An ancient sand dune complex that has evolved into several distinct ecological communities,
Tolowa Dunes encompasses ocean beach, river, open and vegetated sand dunes, wooded ridges,
and wetlands. A diverse assortment of birds, animals and plant life thrive here.

SDSU was founded in 1897 and is one of the largest and oldest higher education facility in
California. Coastal Marine Institute works to protect the Coastal ecosystem.
