50,000 acre land grant in Sacramento Valley.
Bear Flag Revolt -1846-June: Followed afterwards by
the Mexican-American War (1846-1848)
Mormon Battalion Arrival - 1847-Jan: Arrives in San Diego from Iowa.
Gold Find at Sutters Mill - 1848-Jan-24: John Marshall and a crew building
a sawmill at Coloma (about 50 miles up the American River from Sutters Fort) discovers gold tracings
in the mill tailrace. Sutter, fearing abandonment by his workers) tries to keep discovery
a secret but word eventually leaks out.
Gold Find at Mormon Island - 1848-Mar-11: Mormon workers building
a flour mill a few miles downstream from the sawmill discover gold deposits in the area.
First Newspaper Report - 1848-Mar-15: Published in the Californian
in San Francisco. The paper later shuts down by May 28 when most of its readers have left town for the hills.
Sam Brannan's Shout - 1848-May-12: This storekeeper and
publsher of The California Star buys up all available mining equipment to sell at a steep
premium before loudly proclaiming the discovery of gold on the streets of San Francisco. Makes $36,000
in nine weeks.
Gold Find at Feather River - 1848-Jul-4: John Bidwell
discovers an enormous amount of gold at Bidwell Bar on the Feather River, the biggest strke in history.
He uses funds to purchase much land in California. He later becomes a US Congressman and Presidential Candidate.
His mansion in Chico, CA is a historic state park.
