Historic Army Forts

Fort Jones Outpost - Scott Valley
This historic landmark was an important out of the US Military in 1852-58. It was garrisoned by Companies A & E, 1st Dragoons, to protect nearby mining towns from hostile Indian tribes.

Fort Tejon State Historic Park
Restored U.S. Army Dragoon post dating back to 1854-64. The troops were responsible for the security of Southern California. Also home to the experimental U.S. Camel Corps. There are restored adobes from the original fort and the park’s museum features exhibits on army life and local history. The park also has a number of beautiful 400 year-old valley oak trees. Goose Lake Military Camp
Formerly called Pitt's Like, Goose Like was the site of a military camp reportedly established in the spring of 1866 by Company F of the Sacramento Rangers, 2nd California Cavalry. It was disbanded less than five months later.

Camp Pendleton USMC
The largest amphibious training facility in the nation, Camp Pendleton covers 17 miles of Pacific coastline north of Oceanside. It is home to 35,000 active duty Marines and their dependents of the U.S. 1st Marine Division and related units. Visitors may tour during daylight hours - enter thru the Main Gate off the I-5 Freeway.

While many military bases share one or more of Camp Pendleton's training features, none match its broad spectrum. Camp Pendleton has a population of nearly 40,000 Marines and Sailors and provides a variety of services and recreational activities.

Naval Base Point Loma
Located at the mouth of San Diego harbor, Naval Base Point Loma comprises 316 acres on beautiful but rugged coastline, although the main facilities are located on approximately 30 acres of relatively flat land. It has served primarily as a Submarine Base since 1959. Major warships based here is the Third Fleet command ship Coronado, and the five attack submarines of Submarine Squadron 11.

AKA: 32nd Street Naval Station
The base is located south of Downtown San Diego at the foot of 32nd Street near National City. Naval Base San Diego is a major port of the US Pacific Fleet with over 50 warships stationed there.

North Island Naval Air Station
This base has a long famous history connected to naval aviation and has been a San Diego landmark for many years. This US Navy Base is responsible to arm, repair, train, and supply some 140 tenant commands of the US Pacific Fleet. It oversees several facilities including air base, aircraft carriers, amphibious base and several training installations.

Naval Weapons Station Fallbrook - Camp Pendleton
Part of the NWS Seal Beach Command (which includes Detachments in Concord, Corona, and Fallbrook) exists to provide weapons storage, loading, maintenance, assessment and support to ships and submarines of the United States Pacific Fleet. Our facilities also support Coast Guard vessels and Marine Corps units stationed afloat and ashore.

Edwards Air Force Base
For more than 50 years Edwards Air Force Base, home of the Air Force Flight Test Center, has been the home of more major milestones in flight than any other place on earth. Covering nearly 308,000 acres, Edwards is located in the Mojave Desert, adjacent to the largest dry lakebed in North America, Rogers Dry Lakebed.

Mt Laguna Air Force Station - Decommissioned
Mt. Laguna boasts a decommissioned Air Force base, just off Sunrise Highway past the 6000-foot sign. It was a DEW (defense early warning) site, watching for incoming missiles, and housed about 170 people until it was downsized in 1981. Now it is a multi-use satellite and radar communications site, operated primarily by the FAA, out of Los Angeles Center.
